I am sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, but I am hoping
someone here can give me some info. I want to inventory automatically, the
software and whatnot installed on one of my drives. Does anyone know if
there is such a thing for home users? See, I want to do a fresh install of
Xp Pro, but want to wipe the disk and start it all over. But before doing
so, I need to make sure that I know what all needs to be reinstalled. So can
anyone help me with this please?

Secondly, I would also like to save a majority of settings within windows so
I do not have to go back and redo it all. Anyone know of a way or software
that can assist with this?

Thanks much and if you have any other ideas, please pass it along.
Again...thanks and hope to hear from some of you soon.

Generates a nice report of the computer status, hardware, software,
hotfixes, etc. Doesn't list settings per se, but it answers your first
request.

The only software that does that, which I can think of, is expensive and
designed for the network administrators of large organizations.

If you only have to deal with one computer, you should be fine looking under
"Control Panel", "Add or Remove Programs" and taking some notes.

However, for your own computer, I would recommend not even doing that: just
install what you need as you realize you need it, check for newer versions
of it first. Having things on your computer you don't use and have already
forgotten about is probably half the reason you want to start fresh; what
would be the point of replicating that?

Some programs still follow the annoying and outdated practice of storing
their data files under the program's installation folder. You may want to
look over your "Program Files" folder and in the folders of programs you
know should have some data, so that you can save such data files manually.

If you don't know which files you need to save, backing up the entire folder
of that program and putting it back (before you reinstall it) usually works
well.

Can anyone help with this? Would be appreciated.

For the first request, there are several programs that will quickly build a
profile of everything installed on the system. One of the easy programs is
free version of Belarc Advisor.

Second request, XP has a built-in Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. See
this article for a very comprehensive description and tutorial with screen
shots.
