Please Help I am desperate now

M

Mike

Hi

My sister give me her pc (celron processor with Windows millenium) to look
at because she thinks I know about them, I do a bit but I have now been
struggling for the last 36 hours and not really got anywhere I am desperate
for help.

The problems

internet explorer completly locks up for minutes at a time while downloading
a web page. it temporarily unlocks its self from time to time and eventually
when the web page is downloaded its fine.

Her homepage www.wanadoo.co.uk redirects to http://www.newfreehost.com/
after a few minutes (I have noticed it does this with most pages that take a
long time to download, due to the problem I have mentioned above.

Also at the same time (so she says) her resoulution was stuck on 640x480 and
was unchangeable in the settings. it may help to know this but Please note I
fixed theis problem by updating the graphics driver.

I would be so grateful for any help, I am so desperate and fed up with it
now.

Cheers Mike

Mike,

Have you scanned the system for adware/spyware/viruses? If not, you may
wish to do that. There are several free solutions.

SUPERAntiSpyware

Ad-Aware (Lavasoft)
www.lavasoftusa.com

SpyBot

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

scan for spyware and viruses. lots of free tools out there to do
this.

how much RAM in the pc? which operating system? WinXP will function
on 512MB of RAM but you'll get better results with 1GB. anything less
than 512MB and the pc will be slow

when was the last time you/she defragged the hard drive?

is newfreehost her web page host? this could very well be related to
problem #1

Hi Mike :)

It appears that there is hijackware on the system, the redirect of the
homepage, added to the other problems, is a good indication this may be the
cause. Try the following and see if it helps:

Be aware, your Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware,
worms, etc., and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such
as AdAware and SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must
also be run in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan
all files. Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does
not mean your system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean
your machine. Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can
replicate themselves repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly.

Download and install HiJackThis. This is one of the most important steps.
Follow all instructions carefully. This program should be run in Normal
mode.
