Please help! Folder thumbnails keep re-arranging themselves

Can someone help with this issue, please?

In the sub-folders within the My Pictures folder (XP Pro), I have many
pictures (thumbnails view), which I keep having to arrange in the order I
would like because every time I reboot, the order reverts to either
alphabetical or some incomprehensible other order.

I have tried all the options in the "view --> arrange icons by -->" menu,
and none will allow me to arrange and KEEP the order I want. I have tried
unchecking EVERYTHING, uncheking everything except "align to grid",
unchecking everything and then rechecking "align to grid" after I have
arranged the pictures - all with the same result.

In addition, when I uncheck EVERYTHING, the thumbnails do not align
properly. Also, when I check "allign to grid", the picture thumbnails do not
all appear within the window unless the window is maximized to "full screen".

What can I do to get the folders to preserve the order I establish for my
pictures (not "name", "size", "type", "modified", "picture taken on", or
"dimensions"), with the pictures aligning properly and appearing in a
1/2-screen-sized window?

Thank you for your help.

Sara:

I think you're having the same problem I experienced a couple of weeks ago.

When you're viewing the the folder, press ALT and click close (the red X).
That should fix it!

Two things: In Its Tools - Folder Options - View, make sure that
'remember each folder's view settings' is checked.

Second; the number of such settings that get remembered is too small
(unless you install SP2). Kelly has a fix at

Line 2, left, 'Increase Folder view. . .

Thank you very much for your response. The "remember each folder's view
settings" box is already checked. I appreciate the suggestion of Kelly's fix
and will try it.

Could you answer the question a little further for me: is there a way to set
the "Arrange Icons by --> Name, Size, Type, Modified, Picture Taken On,
Dimensions" to a Custom Arrangement - or to add "Custom" to the list?

Thank you for your assistance.

If you use a Details view, you can use View - Choose Details and add a
column from an extensive list. If you then click the header of that
column the display will sort on that (and click again reverses the
sort). Once sorted you can switch to say Icon view and the order will
be retained; I think Autoarrange will need to be off

Thank you. That is very helpful. The problem, however, is that I am working
with pictures (viewed as thumbnails) and design, and the arrangements I
create do not, unfortunately, correspond to any of the parameters listed in
"Choose Details".

Is there a way to keep the arrangements that I create, or is this an
irresoluble dilemma?

Can you arrange them by file name? That sounds like the most logical way to
do it if you ask me. :)
