Please HELP - asap

Hi,
im trying to watch a movie that i just downloaded of kazza
when it completed the download and i went to open it, it
was still a xxxxxxxxxx.dat, how do i change it to avi or
mpeg? because i cant play it in media player?
i tried to rename it to xxxxxxx.avi but made no
difference,
What can i do to see this movie?
