Cant play this movie, please help!

I've just downloaded a movie from Limewire and when I attempt to play it
with Windows Media Player I get these messages,

Ulead MPEG-4 Video Decoder
(Wrong m4v-header)

Then when I click OK I get

Initialize video codec error(return code:65535)

Click OK,

Then WMP opens but no movie!!

Any ideas or assistance much appreciated,

It looks like you have the wrong codec. If i'm reading it right the movie is
coded in one of the newer mpeg4 standards of which there are hundreds of
subversions and types. Since i don't know which codec you exactly need you
should either try installing a universal codec package like ffdshow (search
on google: ffdshow download) or use an independent player with built-in
codecs (search on google: VLC media player), meaning no codecs need to be
installed there for avoiding possible conflicts with current installed codecs.

Well that seems to have had some impact, thanks for that, but further to the
problem the video seems to have some kind of lag going on, jerky display and
sound, any further clues?

Either the video is corrupt (hence the wrong m4v-header message), or you
don't have the right codec installed. I would try installing Apple
Quicktime, as it natively support MPEG-4 playing.
