Windows Explorer and movies

Whenever I try and watch a movie that I have downloaded in any media player
(and I have at least five) I immediately get the following response "whatever
the player is" -- 'the player has encountered a problem and needs to close'.
This is followed by 'Windows Explorer has encountered the problem and needs
to close'.
For a few seconds I get a blue screen which then refreshes itself.

If I attempt to watch a movie in WMV format it plays perfectly. The problem
only occurs with downloaded movies (AVI and MPEG movies)
I cannot be sure, but I feel that the problem began after the most recent
Windows update (about two weeks ago).

Your help will be appreciated as always

5 Media Players ? Unless you have content that needs individual players
you'd be better off trying to cull that list down to 2 or 3 at most. All
those players introduce fighting over file associations and media types.
The more players installed, the greater the interactions and likelihood
that they won't PLAY together well.
