Hi everyone,

I am running Windows XP Professional SP1 on a PCChips M848ALU
supporting my AMD Athlon XP 2500+ oc'ed to 2200MHz with 256Mb of
DDR400 RAM. The CPU has been overclocked, but the following problem
remains when even I have it at stock 166MHz with the RAM in sync, or
when I have it at stock 166MHz with the RAM at 200MHZ using a 5:6
CPU:RAM Ratio in the BIOS.

The thing is, I am receiving 3-4 pairs of "Machine check" and "Machine
check: regs" information events in my Event Viewer at every cold boot
(ie Shutdown.. Turn on again). This also occurs on my parents' Athlon
2000+ (stock) with 512MB of RAM (32MB Shared graphics), but they tend
to only get 2-3 pairs of these events.

Although I am aware that this could easily be ignored as my PC seems
to start up fast and shut down fast, I'm super paranoid and still wish
to know why I get it. I have not tried doing a clean install to see if
it will still be there, as I have just got XP the way I like it, and
installing takes ages on my PC.

Again, I am not saying these are problems, I would just appreciate if
someone much more knowledgable than me could definitively tell me
that! I've read that they're part of WPA, that they occur on AMD procs
only (because of some Intel-specific architecture), that they happen
on every PC, but I can't vouch for these!

I know that some people on this group are very clever and certainly
know their stuff. I hope you might know if I have something to worry
about or not, or if I've managed to duff up another installation!
Thanks in advance guys & gals!

Me again!

I clean installed this afternoon, reformat and everything. First cold
boot into XP without installing anything, I was getting the machine
check events. I figure I can't get rid of them, as at that point I had
my BIOS on its fail-safe settings.

Stuff it, I turned Event Log off! Doing this somehow added ten to
fifteen seconds to my boot time (waits at the "classic" Windows is
starting up... logon box), but I see no reason to have it on as all I
am getting in it are Userenv unload errors and DCOM errors when it
tries to start a service which I have knowingly disabled.

I know that the computer normally takes longer to start up if Event
Log is disabled, IF Windows Management Instrumentation is enabled, but
I have them both disabled now. I don't know how essential WMI is, I
haven't seen anything wrong yet but I'm guessing that as soon as I try
installing any major drivers or games that I will!

I am still wishing to know what the machine check and machine check
regs are and why I get them. Please reply if anyone has an idea!
Thanks in advance,

Daniel

Hi

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Application Popup
Event ID: 26 (IIRC)

Clean installed and I was getting them on first boot. I guess it's
just meant to be!

I am running my computer now with only three services not disabled:
Plug And Play, Remote Procedure Call and Windows Audio. The only thing
I have noticed is the slightly longer startup time, which is due to
Event Log being disabled. However, all I have been doing so far has
been playing with emulators so like you said, it may not be very
stable for much like Prime95 or anything.

I have not tried any stress tests yet. However I suppose I should as I
might be trying to be too clever by disabling that many services.

I appreciate your help a lot. Thanks!

I too have a machine that is getting these EventID's, however, I
noticed that these posts (and other posts I've found) are related to
AMD processors. The system in question is a P4 on an ASUS P4SP-MX.
The employee started two weeks ago and all the parts are right out of
the box. Just wanted to eliminate the thought of it only being the
CPU; maybe it's the ASUS boards? What types of boards are you all
using?

The only symptoms that lead me to any clue whatsoever is that the OS
will hang on reboot at the wallpaper screen, forcing a push of the
reset button. <yikes> That's how I discovered the event log entry in
the first place. Microsoft's sorry excuse for an EventID lookup leads
to this explanation below:
Can anyone help??? Thanks in advance.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 26
Source: Application Popup
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: STATUS_LOG_HARD_ERROR
Message: Application popup: %1 : %2

Explanation
The program could not load a driver because the program user doesn't
have sufficient privileges to access the driver or because the drive
is missing or corrupt.

User Action
To correct this problem:

Ensure that the program user has sufficient privileges to access the
directory in which the driver is installed.
Reinstall the program to restore the driver to the correct location.

Sorry about the missing info in the previous post.

I too have the same problem, which occurs on shutting down Win Xp.

Since the system is identifying an error in a program, it would be nice if
the program were identified in the message, so that one could do something
about it!!!
