Please help! 16 bit windows subsystem error

While trying to run set up to install software from a cd I get the following
message.

"c:\windows \system32\autoexec.nt.
the system file not suitable for running ms dos and microsoft windows
applications"

I tried on two other computers running xp and have no problem. I am running
xp as well. I suspect a corrupt file but don't know which or what to do
about it. any suggestions would be appreciated.
