I have a doc that has the following style definition

Heading 1 , Heading1 , Char Char1 Char , Headiung 1 Char Char Char
Char Char + Space After 12 pt

The effect of the above on a heading like this

IV Project Charter

The roman numeral IV is higlited in a certain color and the text
"Project Charter" is in Bold font .

Can someone explain the meaning of the style definition ? Assuming my
question makes sense .

THanks

Hi Newreader,

Heading 1 , Heading1 , Char Char1 Char , Headiung 1 Char Char Char

The question makes sense, sort of. But what you show in the style
definition doesn't contain the formatting you mention explicitly.

What you're seeing is a so-called "linked style". Word has
automatically generated a number of additional styles. This occurs when
you select some text, then apply a paragraph style. Word decides you
want to have a character style with the same formatting as the
paragraph style and creates a the new character style with the same
name as the paragraph style plus "Char". Apparently, this linked style
was re-applied over a paragraph, and then that over text...

In short, it's a mess that you're going to have trouble cleaning up
because you won't be able to delete it. (Word won't let you delete
Heading 1, or anything associated with it.)
