Bold on Bold

WORD 2003

My Headings in doc are Bold (from another application). The Heading Styles
said Bold, so they appeared as non bold. I changed all Heading style
definition to 'regular' and it all was good (they appeared bold). However,
the TOC is bold. Changing the TOC style definition from not bold to bold
has no effect. Why? I can select the whole TOC and un bold it, but why
cannot I do it from Style definition ala Heading styles?

The problem is that the bold style is applied as local character formatting
to the heading styles. The TOC inherits such character formatting.

What you should do: Change your heading styles back to bold and reset each
heading to the paragraph style (i.e. remove the character formatting). You
should be able to select all instances of each heading style via the Task
Pane and press Ctrl+Spacebar to reset all the paragraphs in one operation -
repeat this for each heading style used.
