template styles confusion

I have become really confused by all the reading, tutorials, etc.
Goal: be able to use the same formatting throughout a project. The style
is Chicago Style used in academic circles. Included are 1" margins, 3
headings, 12 pt Times Roman font, double spacing, paragraph indent, indended
list with numbering, tables.
Question: Can someone provide a step-by-step how-to? or point me to the
definitive articles in microsoft help or elsewhere.
The trouble seems to be that I am attempting to ascertain what articles to
follow when I really don't know. Thanks a zillion.

You need to start with a template
(http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart1.htm) in which
you incorporate all the desired formatting, then create each of the
documents based on that template.
