playing two movies in ppt or pptx

I want to play two movies side-by-side simultaneously in my presentation. I
have the side-by-side part down, but can't find a way to get the two movies
to start at the same time, even though both are set to start automatically
(have tried all the settings and none work).

Look in the custom animation pane (Animations > Custom Animation). Is the
second movie set to play "After Previous"? Change it to "With previous" if
so.
