Playing .midi files in PowerPoint

I'm very new at this. So far I've been successful at getting a .wav sound to
play in my presentation. It even shows up in the custom animation/slide
transition taskbar under "Sounds." But so far I have not been able to get a
..midi file to play also. A dialog box appears saying it must be a .wav. I'm
using PowerPoint 2003.

Where am I going wrong and thanks for being there?!

midi files will play in all but early versions. Are you using insert > movies
and sounds? You cannot use a midi as a transition sound nor can you embed
them (only link to them)

Thank you so much for your reply, John. I didn't realize just how little I
know until I realized I don't know how to link a sound to a .ppt. I want it
to play pretty much through the whole presentation. Yes, I'm using
insert>movies and sounds>sounds from file.

Could you please tell me how to link the midi file which will be put on a CD
along with the midi and wave files related to it? Thanks again, John.

If you only have PowerPoint 2003 installed and not Office 2007 you should be
able to get you midi files to play with no problem.

You need to go to:
Insert Movies and Sounds
Click on Sound From File
Tell PowerPoint where the file is located (probably your desktop or your USB)
The sound icon will display
When the sound icon displays, click on Custom Animation and then click in
the appropriate dialog boxes to let PowerPoint know how many slides you want
to midi to play through.
This worked fine for me for years until I installed PowerPoint 2007. Right
now I have both versions on my computer and neither version will play midi
files.

I am glad that it worked for you.

Be careful if you every install PowerPoint 2007 because it may no longer work.

That is what happened to me. I used the same procedure that I gave to you
for years without problem. Then once Office 2007 was installed, I could not
get it to work any longer.

I use to link to midi files for years in PowerPoint 2000 and in PowerPoint
2003 but cannot do so any longer now that we have PowerPoint 2007. I was
great, I could set the number of slides tha I wanted to midi to play thorugh
and if it were a short midi, I could just set it to loop unitl stopped and
then it would play until I reached the slide that I set it to stop at. No
problem back then.

I think Microsoft might have eliminated this feature without realizing it.

I read something on one of their help menus about putting the midi in the
same folder as the presentation and inserting the midi from the folder but
it still does not work.

If you have any ideas on why it no longer works in 2007, please let me know.
