I have a Sony VAIO desktop with a DVD-ROM drive and a CD-RW drive. I can
play DVD movies fine using the DVD-ROM drive. BUT, I have a Sony VAIO laptop
with a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo and it won't play movies, saying I need a
decoder. Both are running XP Home. What's up?

Open XP's "Help and Support" and type: DVD , and hit enter.
Click on the topic titled: "DVD Troubleshooting".

Try reinstalling your DVD decoder. If you don't have one, you'll
need to purchase and install one. Some suggestions:

Your laptop does not have the decoder installed that the desktop does.
Decoders usually are part of a paid DVD viewing program, such as PowerDVD!

Thanks!
