Susan, just a note on a internet program called NetLaunch, as
far as I remember, the one that works on XP has a 30 days time
limit ...and I *think* I saw it listed in PL, is the version
listed there limitation free?

Q. Why is Netlaunch freeware? I'd have gladly paid for it, and you could
definitely charge money for it!
A. A few reasons...First, I don't always have the time to maintain
it--afterall, Black Castle Software is a one-man show! I make my money
from contract programming jobs, so my first obligation is to my paying
clients. I would not feel right charging users for a piece of software
that I was not sure I could support on a steady, continual basis.
Second, Netlaunch was an experiment for me. Netlaunch was the first
Win32 app I wrote specifically for Windows 95/NT4, and I was
experimenting with shortcuts, RAS and the system tray...Netlaunch just
kinda stumbled out of my experimental rubble, much like the dreaded
Frankenstein. Like Frankenstein, it's a collage of mixed experiments,
and has a mind of its own. I felt that the things I programmed into
Netlaunch should have been part of the Windows 9x/NT OS to begin with,
and why should all of us have to pay for such basic things? I'd rather
see all of us die-hard 'net users working with Netlaunch than having to
fumble around with 2-3 other programs that together make up only a
percentage of Netlaunch's functionality. Finally, I gained a lot more
than money by publishing Netlaunch. The accolades, the contacts, and the
friends I've made are worth much more to me than any financial rewards I
might have earned.

Q. Why is Netlaunch freeware? {snipped}

yes I know, it has been always freeware, the 98 one. Yet I was
on their newsgroup (news.blackcastlesoft.com) a few months ago
the author said that the xp ones is with 30 days limits beta -
and this information was somehow not listed in the site; In
addition, what I don't know is that if the author ever offered
a free one for XP so there is somehow a free one around. But
anyhow... if someone really are using the xp one and find it
not functioning, they will report eventually...

I just installed NetLaunch XP v.4.00.3.20 to try to find out, but I am
only more confused.

It identifies itself during installation as the "Shareware Version." I
can't find any mention in the program or docs about time limits or
about how to buy any version of NetLAunch XP. In the helpfile, there
are two features marked "full version only" but I can't find any other
reference to a fuller version. The only version I can see on the
homepage is the one I downloaded. The homepage says NetLaunch is
freeware, but that seems to be a FAQ written before NetLaunch XP was
written. I guess I will keep it around for thirty days and see what
happens.

Thanks Q. :)

I just did a quick search of ACF posts - didn't find anything there
about Netlaunch being shareware. There's a Netlaunch newsgroup - didn't
check that - it might have some info. . .

Yes, bcsoft.public.netlaunch.announce, I read this from their
newsgroup but cannot find the post anymore (I don't know how
to retrive the old post from that group and I don't think
there are anyway to search in that group, either). It
basically said that the XP version is in beta stage and the
beta version is 30 days, and when it comes out, it will be
shareware. However, the 98 version is still freeware.

Try NetRun instead...it *is* free.

I like it better on XP than NetLaunch.

I agree - I'll leave the PW description as is for now.
