WinPatrol
(Liteware)
Windows OS: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Languages: English; German; French; Espanol; Italian; Russian; Norwegian
Description: WinPatrol uses a heuristic approach to detecting attacks
and violations of your computing environment. Traditional security
programs scan your hard drive searching for previously identified
threats. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and
alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll
be removing dangerous new programs while others download new reference
files.

WinPatrol isn't the only software we recommend for complete safety but
with Scotty on Patrol you'll find yourself informed on what's going on
inside your computer. WinPatrol puts you back in control of your
computer so you'll know what programs are and should be running at all
times. NOTES: Win 95 Users Only: Download msaardk.exe See

FileMap by BB
(Registerware)
Windows OS: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Languages: English
Description: Have you ever noticed how the number of files in your
windows and system directories seem to mysteriously grow over time? Or,
you might have already heard from victims of hijack programs describing
how phantom files had taken control of their browsers, with no idea
where they came from. It’s times like that when it would be very handy
to have a record of files before and after so you could determine which
files do not belong.

FileMap by BB lets you take control of the growing number of files on
your system by making record lists of those in the Windows, the System,
and the C:\ root directories so you can constantly check what has been
added (or removed).

ALSO...After uninstalling software, you really have no idea which
phantom files will be left behind in your Windows or System folders. For
some programs, during the uninstall process, you are even informed that
a particular file(s) might be shared, & necessary for the operation of
other applications\programs. You are then asked if you want to keep the
file or remove it. But how can you be confident you're making the right
decision??? If you're like most of us, you simply wouldn't know!

After comparing the before and after file records, any files left behind
after uninstalling software are easily exposed. You will be in full
control of any so-called "shared files" you want to keep.

Now with Boot Alert...Select Boot Alert to automatically launch each
time your system boots up. This is a valuable layer of security which
quickly indicates a change to the file counts in monitored directories
each time the computer is booted. Use this feature to alert you of any
malicious files infecting your system inadvertently downloaded from the
Internet, which are often installed to one of the monitored directories.

EasyCleaner
(Donationware)
Windows OS: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Languages: English and many other languages
Description: EasyCleaner is a small program which searches Windows'
registry for entries that are pointing nowhere. Deleting these entries
will speed your computer up. But as you already might know, deleting
entries from registry can be dangerous for your computer, so it is wise
to make a backup of your registry. On my computer, deleting entries
which were pointing nowhere, speeded my computer up! EasyCleaner also
lets you delete all kinds of unnecessary files like temps, backups etc.
You can search for duplicate files and you can view some intresting info
about your disk space usage! Deleting invalid shortcuts from start-menu
is possible as well.

If you think version 1.2.0 is the "last freeware version" I need to note that in the program
description. If it isn't marked as a LFW version I update the PL program description when a new
version comes out (the LFW designation is a heads-up that tells me NOT to update the app). I didn't
(can't) try the program but it does look as if the latest version is free (it probably should be
labeled as Liteware). ISTM you (or someone) should try it to be sure. I did a bit of looking and
turned up this info.

The reg. screen occurs after it is installed. The reg. involves having
to go to the site and get a pass phrase. The author uses this method to
keep track of how many folks are actually using the tool. From the
readme file...

Help me monitor how many people are using my software by visiting
www.dogkennels.net/filemap888 and receiving a FREE password to stop any
NAG screens from appearing. This gives more accurate indication of how
many people are really using the program, instead of relying on the
download figures from software libraries across the World.

Please note: You are not required to leave any email address, it is just
a simple way for me to learn how many people are actually using the
program by the number of page hits.

To get the password, simply type www.dogkennels.net/filemap888 into your
browser’s address bar, or use the shortcut link by clicking REGISTER on
the drop down HELP menu.

Software vendors may disclose the password with the program on any sites
which are not written in English, without seeking permission. The
password may also be disclosed on any magazine cover disks with the
program (or any other CD’s), without seeking permission. This will allow
all users to benefit from this program even if they do not understand
this text file.

This neat little tool is an excellent added layer of security. It only
runs when launched. The "Boot Alert" when enabled does a list comparison
when the computer is started and then offers to run the tool if you wish
only if a change has been detected. It adds to the startup time only
approx. 1/10 of a second. I've been using it for the last couple of
version releases. (a little over a year I think).

Description: XMS/EMS RAM disk installable and resizable from command
line. You can choose the drive letter. Up to 2 Gbytes supported.
Include a little helper for HIMEM 3.09+ to let it use more than 64MB.
You can resize the disk (down to zero, or up to 2 Gbytes) at any time
and so regain memory for another usage. This is possible on DOS
command line but not under Windows because of virtualization. The
transient part of EXE will calculate all parameters for the new disk
(it uses the same ones as MS-DOS for hard disk, so they should be
convenient for all cases). For help type: XMSDSK /?
