Pivot tables Crash excel when changing selection

I am currently using pivot tables (Excel 2002) to sum data
across a pivottable field. I am using the show data
as: "running total" in "Date" function on the pivot table
field (located by selecting options button once you have
selected field settings for the data variable).

The example is: I have monthly data that I sum each month
and then instead of showing the monthly total I use
show "running total" in "date" (another pivot field)to get
a cumulative series. Whenever I change the selection of
the pivot table excel crashes. I have found that if I
change the "show data as:" box back to normal, then Excel
does not crash.

How can I solve this problem?

Excel also crashes on my when I update a formula of a
similar Pivot Table. Below is the message that I get.
