Pivot Table Options 'Fields per column'

What does the 'Fields per column' option do in the Pivot Table Options
window? I've created a pivot table then changed this from the default of -0-
to another value but don't see a change in my pivot table.

My interpretation is what she says is:
If you have several page fields then...
setting Fields per column to zero lists them in a single column or
setting Fields per row to zero lists them in a single row.
