pirated software

I have a Compaq computer with AMD 700 MHz processor that
came originally with Windows 98SE. My son and a friend
loaded Windows XP Pro onto my computer against my
wishes. Now I need to fix the problem because I don't
want to use pirated software. If I return to Windows
98SE by running the recovery disc that came with my
computer, I will have to reload all of the other software
that I use. Keeping Windows XP would be the easiest
solution, but how do I make it legal? If I purchase
Windows XP Pro, which version should I use - OEM, Full
Version, Upgrade from Windows 98 Version? Can I just
reinstall Windows XP Pro with the new CD, then activate
and register it to make it legal?

Where do I go from here?

Thank you.

You'll need to purchase a "full version" of a retail or OEM
version of Windows XP Professional and proceed with
a "repair install".

Since he had Win98SE legitimately installed, why wouldn't he be able to use
an upgrade version and save $100?

Gary

Because he has a "recovery CD" for Windows 98 and not
a conventional Microsoft Windows 98 installation CD.
