Pinter Suggestions ?

Any and all comments appreciate , except those about the 'evils' of
refilling, of course.

I have an 83 year old neighbour who received a 'free' Dell/Lexmark printer
with his computer. It's toast , and we're looking for something 'affordable'
( up to $150CDN) to replace it with.

Photo printing is NOT a priority ....he basically prints text / web pages
etc. He would like to be able to refill through a local company. I would
have suggested a Canon perhaps, but I think the warnings about refilled
carts with the new printers might be problematic for him ?

Ideally , I think a tri colour cartridge might be a better choice for him as
opposed to separate tanks. I'm not a fan of Epsons and I don't know a lot
about the current batch of HPs..so that's why I'm here! Even a multifunction
with a tri colour cart would be acceptable despite the higher cost per page

TIA!

Refilling is somewhat of an issue on the newer models. I can't speak
from direct experence yet, but from my understanding you can refill the
cartridges, but you get a warning that the cartridge is empty, and you
lose the ability to meter. As in one would have to pop open the lid,
remove the cartridge, and look to see if it has ink. This would be the
current generation ip4200/5200/6600D... the older generation
ip3000/4000/5000/6000D/8500 are unaffected by this.

his hand will probably be too shakey and create a mess. he should have
an inexpensive laser printer like an hp laser to meet his needs.

If you are interested in just text and refilling, then it would
probably be best to go with an HP. When it comes to text they are
usually pretty solid, and they make the best cartridges for refilling.
Most of their mid-level inkjets are the same, but stay away from their
really cheap ones (ones under like $70) because they aren't worth the
hassle.

If he isn't going to be printing photos and wants to have them
refilled, then you are right that he could be better off with just one
color cartridge. You are also right to stay away from Epsons as they
can be a pain to operate.
