Pink vertical line from top to bottom of display

I am using Windows XP Home edition on a Toshiba laptop. Yesterday this line
suddenly appeared on the screen when I was working in MicroSoft Word and I
have not been able to get rid of it. It appears no matter which programme I
am using.

I also noticed today that when I log off or change users and move the mouse
across the screen, the colours on the screensaver image fade to black and
white.

See if you can find and borrow a separate monitor. You laptop should have a connector to attach the
separate monitor.
Then you can find out if it is your screen, or the video card that is causing your problems.
From your description, it sound like your monitor is failing.
Unfortunately, replacing a laptop monitor will not be inexpensive.

Thanks...I think it sounds like I should just try to get it fixed - luckily
it's still under guarantee!
