Steven

when I ping a machine i get the message "request timed out." What soes this
mean?

The ping got tired of waiting for a reply and gave up.

The destination computer - or some other computer situated between your
computer and the destination computer - is either out of service, ignoring
pings, or too busy with other requests to pay attention to your ping. Don't
take it personally.

Usually indicates:

1) ping service not recognised on "destination" PC.

2) Destination PC not turned on

3) Firewall (somewhere from your PC to destination.)
