Ping works but Browser fails

I have Windows XP machine with all the latest service
packs and hot fixes and security updates.

Intermittently, my browser fails to connect to the
internet. I have a cable modem connection with a router
being used as a dhcp server to share the connection. When
my browser gives me the dns error #404, I can go to a
command prompt and successfully ping the same site.

These days I am getting connected only intermittently.
Other computers on my network work fine except for this
one. What is going on? Please help.
