My network consists of 80 XP Pro desktops in a Windows 2000 domain. Six of
those dekstops are suffering from a bizarre DNS problem (at least I think it
is DNS-related). When I ping Computer A by name it returns the correct IP
address. I know it is the correct IP address because I run ipconfig on it.
However, when I ping that IP address that it returned I get the computer name
of a completely different computer in the network (Computer B). When I ping
the actual name or IP of Computer B I get the correct name or IP back. Even
when I turn Computer B off the same problem happens!! When I ping Computer B
by IP or name it returns B's correct IP and name.
Both Computer A & B are set to DHCP. I've tried flushing and re-registering
the DNS on each computer, including my desktop from which I have been doing
the pinging. I've tried renaming Computer B and gave it a static IP address
with no luck...B's original computer name always returns when I ping the IP
address of Computer A. I've deleted their name/ip address mappings from the
Forward and Reverse Lookup Zones one the DNS Server.
This occurs on two other pairs of computers in the domain. I'm stumped and
look forward to any suggestions.
Thank You,
