Ping outside local network

XP Pro clients on an SBS 4.5 network with up to date Proxy
server 2.0 cannot ping any IP addresses outside the local
network. They can, however, access the internet via web
browsers. I have an esoteric program that we use that
requires the ability to ping IP addresses outside our
network. Win 98 clients can ping all addresses. How do I
fix this.

TIA

Hi -

I have a pile of questions -

Can you ping your own workstation?

Can you ping workstations on the same subnet as you?

Can you ping workstations on the LAN side of the router
that aren't on the same subnet as you?

Can you ping *any* host past the WAN side of your company
Internet gateway?

The answers to these questions may help you troubleshoot
the problem.

Sounds to me like ICMP (ping) network packets are being
firewalled off. I'd check to see that the Internet
Connection Firewall on each workstation is disabled and
that any other software firewall on the machines allows
ICMP packets through. If that fails, it's time to talk
to the Information Assurance guys on your network ;-)

Hope this helps -
