'Ping' in firewall log

Will somebody please explain to me (in simple language) what the term 'Ping'
means and what it does.

Ping simply means someone is just seeing whether they can
get a reply back from your computer when they send a
message. It is a tool to check network access.

This **may** be a sign of unauthorised attempts to access
your computer, but it may be normal background traffic.

Try this in command prompt:
ping www.microsoft.com

for an example.
