ping errors

I have a home network consisting of a DSL modem, a
wireless Linksys router, an XP Professional PC (my main
PC), and XP Pro laptop, and a Win98 PC.

The Win98 PC and XP laptop connect via wireless
connections to the router and can ping each other fine
(although they do not see each other in Network
Places......another issue to be dealt with later).
However, they cannot ping the main PC, which is plugged
directly into the router. The main PC, can ping itself
(127.0.0.1) but nothing else, not even the router.
However, the Internet works fine on all 3 machines. When
I try to ping from the main PC, it gives me a message
saying "Ping error 65." When I go into Network settings
on the main PC, everything is set up correctly, but I
notice that there is now an Internet Gateway icon listed
along with my LAN connection to the router. This Gateway
icon says it is connected at 3.2 Mbps, and it disappears
if I remove or disable the LAN connection. I'm guessing
that this icon is related to my ping problems??? Any
ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This points to a firewall problem on the 'main PC'.

Error 65 from a ping attempt, and un-pingability from
other machines both point to this.

This is usually caused by:
1) A firewall being incorrectly configured..

Disable XP's built-in firewall, disable or un-install 3-rd party
firewalls during troubleshooting.

2) A 3-rd party firewall being incorrectly un-installed.

If you ever had a 3-rd party firewall, and un-installed it, you may have
done it wrong. Simply un-installing from add/remove programs may not be
correct. Refer to the firewall website for correct un-install procedures.

(ZoneAlarm is a favourite here. Some versions required you to disable 'run
at startup', then reboot, before uninstalling. Otherwise the underlying
TrueVector service would continue to run and cause these problems. )

The fix is to re-install the firewall, then follow the un-install procedure
carefully.

The internet gateway is not the problem.
That is just UPnP feature on the router being detected by XP.

I'm away from my network at the moment.......but will be
back to it in the morning. I'll give it a try and see if
any of the firewall stuff you mentioned is the cause. I
know that the internal XP firewall is turned off, but I
believe someone did have a software firewall installed at
one time. Thanks for the advice.....I'll let you know
what happens.

Your suggestions worked. ZoneAlarm was installed. I
simply shut it down, and everything started working as it
should. Thanks for all your help!
