Pin to start option

Had this shortcut set up for years. Moved file location and it blew up. I
created new shortcut, but can not pin. I just added a web location as a
pinned shortcut.

Is drag & drop enabled for the Start Menu?

Taskbar & Start Menu Properties -> 'Start Menu' tab -> 'Customize' button -> 'Advanced' tab ->
'Enable dragging & dropping'

Is this behavior common to all shortcuts or just the one?

Yes, it is enabled. Is not common to other shortcuts.

I created a workaround by creating shortcut to application that file will
open with, then edited path to include space followed by location of file.
This new shortcut did allow me to pin to start menu.
thanks,

May be your old shortcut was setup like the shortcut you have now. There
is no way of pinning a shortcut that refers to a normal file not an
application.

What are you basing that statement on? I can drag & drop a shortcut to a file and place it in the
pinned area.

I was wrong. Sorry about the wrong statement.

No need to apologize. It's just that with the persistence of posts via google groups, it's better
to end a thread with erroneous statements clarified.

In regard to pinning a file to a Start Menu, I have had success in the past
using drag and drop -- but cannot do it now. I can do it with programs, so my
settings for D&D seem to be correct.

Many thanks.
