Pie Chart problems

I have data to be represented by a pie chart and need to include a text box
with the grand total of the data somewhere on the chart.

I've been able to create an embedded pie chart but can't get the text box
with the grand total to stay on the chart when I click off the chart area.
Then I tried to create the chart on a chart tab instead of making an embedded
chart--I can get the text box to stay on the chart but then I can't get the
data to update when it changes (the series values remain the same--it's
reading a total row).

I need the pie chart to be updated as new data is added AND I need the grand
total to be displayed (I assume via a text box). Is it a dream for me to
have my cake and eat it too??

Create the chart as normal. Have the total in another cell. Click on the
chart and add a normal text box from the drawing toolbar, then in the formula
bar type =and click on the cell with the total. Then right click on the
border of the text box and then order>bring to front. (I have tested this on
2003)

John, I tried your solution on the embedded chart since that is where I
already have the totals updating. I couldn't get it to work--as soon as I
click off the chart, the text box is no longer visible. I am using EXCEL
2002--could that be the problem? Can I send my example to you off line so
you can see if I am missing something?

I have just tried it in 2002 and it still works although it did put a second
text box in by its self. This could be over your box with the total in it so
just has to be put in the correct order or the blank box deleted

John, I tried again but no luck. I even tried clicking on "bring forward"
and it only stays visible as long as I am clicked on the chart. As soon as I
click off, the box (and the data in the box) disappear.

This seems so simple yet is driving me crazy (not to mention the fact that
it really drives down my self esteem. I've created much more complex charts
yet can't get a measly little text box to cooperate.) How can I send my
data/charts to you for review?

John: Your profile doesn't show up in NNTP. Neither do the ratings you
request.

Steph: Select the chart (select any element except a text item). Click in
the formula bar, then type the number if it's static or type = and click on
the cell with the value (no need to create the textbox first). Press enter
and a textbox should appear in the middle of the chart. This will put a
textbox in the chart.
