I lost my navigation (left border), my pictures are showing blank with a
small icon in the upper left corner, and I cannot access SHARED
BORDERS.....HELP! I'm using Frontpage 2003. What did I do to cause this?

How are you access the copy of your web?

My published site looks fine (needs a little tweaking, though).....I can open
Frontpage, go to my site and open all the pages. Everything is there, except
the shared borders disappeared causing my picture at the top to disappear
along with my vertical navigation. In the body, another picture outline is
there with the small icon in the upper left. All the text is off center, and
the thing looks a mess. This is on all pages. I can't insert a navigation
link or shared borders, as these are greyed and not accessible. I can insert
a new picture, but it shows up as a little icon like the one already on the
page. I know I punched some button and made all this happen, but the site
looked fine when I turned it off a couple days ago. Today, it's a mess....I'm
a klutz for sure!

Is this on your local machine, and did you create this site on this machine?

If not, how did the site get onto this machine?

Yes, I created the site on my pc in Frontpage. I then published the site. It
published fine, but needed some tweaking. I opened FP from my pc to make
changes, straighten out the alignment, got everything LOOKING good, left the
text alone, and re-published....left it a few days, went back to my pc to FP,
opened this site, and opened the index page. It looked demolished as
described above. I'm thinking that my aligning the picture inside the top
shared border might have thrown the whole thing off. It published fine and
shows fine on the web, but the site inside FP on my pc is messed up. I'm
afraid to access my server thru FP for fear of messing up what is there now.
The only way to access my server is thru FP by clicking PUBLISH TO WEB. Why
is SHARED BORDERS grey and not accessible? I went to TOOLS, AUTHORING, and
the SHARED BORDERS box is checked...so I know it's not turned off. And, what
causes all the pictures on my work-site to show up as little microsoft icons
in the upper left corner? No picture will show up correctly. They are all
pgfs. My site is www.azalea-manor.com (assisted living facility) and it looks
fairly good. Do I dare mess with it with FP acting up like this? My code view
shows the pictures with several 20% inbetween the words, but the pgf is still
there. Is there a book I can buy that explains all this? I have progressed
rapidly with FP....enough to get this site lookin good and published. But I
need some major instructions....any suggestions? I spend days hunting for
answers on these boards and elsewhere, but still have the same problem. Not
looking for miracles and willing to do whatever it takes. I opened a brand
new page, inserted a picture, and the dang thing showed up as a little
microsoft icon.....What is going on with this FP on my machine? Thank you for
your interest and any suggestions. I am not a web designer, just trying to
save money by publishing my own site.....but am perplexed at this point and
want to learn more!

1. When you went back to make changes, did you use File Menu | Open Site to open your local site
first?

2. %20 indicates that you have a space in the file or folder name, rename ALL (from within FP) as
spaces create problems. Also do not use any special character in file or folder names.

3. To open the site on the live/remote server use File Menu | Open Site and enter
http://www.azalea-manor.com then your login info, then click Ok, then click Open.

4. As a browser visitor, I think your site look very good (in IE), with a few minor issues of
content being displayed out of place on pages. I am not one to recommends using CSS for placement,
so my suggest would be to have used tables to structure your page layout with a FP Include Page
component for the navigation and no Shared Borders, thereby avoiding content being displayed where
it wasn't intended to be displayed.

Suggest the you get rid the following items as they provide no benefit to site visitors or look bad:

1. Page transition, only supported in IE browsers.

2. WordArt, only viewable in IE running under Windows as a sharp graphic images, other browser see a
down-level GIF image which is not sharp (breaks and spots in the letters).

Thanks, Thomas,
I'm going to work on this to see what happens and will let you know the
results. I'm just an amateur, but love it! Thanks also for your suggestions.
It's always nice to have a professional critique the site for advice. I've
started working with tables, but was told the shared borders would make
everything uniform. So, I've used shared borders along with tables because I
wanted the navigation to be on the left vertical location and the top
pictures to line up correctly. Tables would do all of this without the shared
borders...right? Doesn't matter...can't get to shared borders anymore...! I
also can't insert NAVIGATION on the left, right, top, or bottom unless I go
to those little individual buttons. I can't even access THEMES! And those
image placeholders are still a mystery, as none of the images are showing up
in my FP work-site on my pc. What I did wrong is beyond me, but continuing to
investigate seems to be my assignment for this weekend! The best way to learn
the program is to make mistakes and try to investigate. Thanks for your
interest...MsAzalea

Yes, tables with a FP Include Page Component will allow you to create the site just like you
currently have it. You could also use the Dynamic Web Template w/tables and FP Include Page
Component as well, but works best when you are starting a site from scratch.

Yo, Thomas!
You're a genius! I followed your instructions in the last post and my pages
started coming up like they're supposed to with pictures, shared borders,
etc. The navigation was messed up, but was able to repair that little
inconvenience. (They got messed up this morning while I was trying to redo
everything and couldn't access NAVIGATION from each page) Thomas, you know
your stuff here! For some reason, I wasn't accessing the site correctly, but
going to file menu and opening site seemed to do the trick....before, I was
entering thru the site name on the right side of the page when FP first opens
up. Doing it your way performed a MIRACLE! Thanks so much.....now I can run
outside and enjoy the sunshine today without worrying about this
program.....will return to tweak and play with it tonight. Thanks again,
MsAzalea
