Is there any way to alter options - I want to have the file name shown when I
view my pictures as a slide show. Is there any way to do this.

Open Start, "My Pictures", click on a blank area of the window and select
view details. Select view as slide show from the options on the left.

I think the closest you'll get is to choose view as "filmstrip".
