Picture preview in My Computer

I use to be able to open files with "my computer" using the folder mode. and
as i scanned down the list of photos, I would see a preview of the photo in
the left column.

I have lost that ability and don't know how to retrieve it.

If you x-out whatever view is shown in the left column, the remaining
"Common Tasks" view should show the photo preview.
