Photo info plug-in not working

wI apolgize for cross posting the question below. I realize now that this is
a more appropriate group than the group I originally posted this with:

I installed a Microsoft Explorer Plug-in from this Microsoft site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/photoinfo.mspx

When I right click on a photo in Windos Picture and Fax Viewer, an error
message comes up saying "A file system I/O error occured. Please check that
the files are not locked and that you have appropriate permission".

There's no guidance on the Microsoft site, no FAQ, nor any assistance at all.

I've been the sole user of my pc since I bought it, and have never had a
problem accessing any photos or anything else on it.

I think the plug-in could be useful if I can get it to work, but if not, I'd
like to uninstall it. But it doesn't appear in startup nor in the control
panel add/delete programs, so I'm at a loss on how to delete it.

Does anyone here have any suggestions on getting it to work, or if
not, how to delete this plug-in?

Sorry, I cannot offer a solution for
the error.

On my system...the tool is listed in
Add-Remove Programs as:
"Microsoft Photo Info"

John,
I looked again and you are correct. I don't know how I missed it earlier.
If I don't get a response telling me how to fix the plug-in so it works, I'll
delete it.
Thanks again for your reply

Hi John,
I have the same problem with some of my photos.
I could see the problems only in Photos which contains iptc meta data before.
I have written the iptc meta data with exifTools 6.
Photos without meta data don´t show these errors
Perhaps there is a compatibility problem with the meta tags.

Grreetings,
Dirk

Welcome to the club. There seems to be an issue with the way that the
Microsoft developers have iterpreted the metadata specs. As a result, Photo
Info does not like the way that some other metadata editors work, and throws
this error. It's been reported to Microsoft, but no news as yet as to what
they intend to do about it.

I first reported the problem on my blog here:

Subsequently I posted this:

Perhaps I should open a new thread fo this problem. It is very serious IMHO
but not mentioned often (yet). Probably experienced Exif users don't look at
consumer type tools and vice versa. Anyhow.

Vista's Photo Gallery and the PhotoInfo tool mess up the Exif data of my
photos (in JPG).

Adobe PSE and MS P.It! will delete all MarkerNotes but these can be inserted
again from a backup (copy of original) using tools like ExiMerge of ExifTool.

After adding labels by Photo Gallery or PhotoInfo an attempt to re-insert
MarkerNotes result in an error message and it cannot be done :-(.

Using Adobe PSE5 Organiser for adding labels (tags) and telling it to save
this data with the photo (JPG) no MarkerNotes are lost. If they are left out
by the PSE editor then they can be easily added from a backup.

Anybody seeing the same issue ?
