Anyone know why this might have happened lately?

The details of what is listed in the InfoTip for image files is kept in
this Registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image

It follows the parameters explained in this article.... scroll down to
the section on multimedia files and images:
Customize Windows Explorer Tooltips

To add the default parameters for image file InfoTips in XP back into
the Registry, either manually add the correct info using the Registry
Editor, OR copy and paste the info between the asterisk lines below,
into Notepad, and save on the desktop as "ImageInfoTips.reg" (INCLUDING
the quotation marks so that it saves as a .reg file). Then right-click
the ImageInfoTips.reg file on the desktop, click Merge from the menu
that appears and click OK to the confirmation, to add to the Registry.

Be sure you include the blank line at the end of the copy/paste, or the
registry Editor will not include the last line of text when merging!

Note that there are 3 lines for the values, the lines starting with:

into more than three lines, you will have to unwrap them when saving.

Glen,

J's post prompted me to see if I was still getting that hovered info. I
wasn't. In fact I was getting nothing. So I created and successfully ran
your registry edit. But I still see nothing on hovering.

Hmmm... J is showing a pop-up InfoTip that has incomplete information.
You're showing no pop-up InfoTip at all.... at least in your screen
capture. Are you getting InfoTips for other file types?

I suspect in your case, with no pop-up at all, it may be another
side-effect of the FarStone Viewer you were using, that messed with your
thumbnails as well.

Check that in My Computer> Tools > Folder Options > View tab, that you
have a check mark in the box for "Show pop-up description for folder and
desktop items"

Also check that you have InfoTip values and data for all file types, at:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*]
"QuickTip"="prop:Type;Size;Write"
"InfoTip"="prop:Type;DocAuthor;DocTitle;DocSubject;DocComments;Write;Size"
"AlwaysShowExt"=""
"TileInfo"="prop:Type;Size"

Also make sure you haven't disabled InfoTips, ToolTips or pop-up
balloons with any tweaking utility like TweakUI.

Yep, the data is there for sure, here's a Copy&Paste of the key :-

prop:Dimensions;WhenTaken;DocTitle;DocComments;CameraModel;Type;Size

I'm not sure what else to suggest. Since you are getting the InfoTip
but with reduced info in it, I am guessing your entries are correct here
also:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*]
"QuickTip"="prop:Type;Size;Write"
"InfoTip"="prop:Type;DocAuthor;DocTitle;DocSubject;DocComments;Write;Size"
"AlwaysShowExt"=""
"TileInfo"="prop:Type;Size"

I don't know where else this info (or the lack thereof) could be coming
from. As I mentioned in my reply to Terry, perhaps it's a side effect
of some 3rd-party viewer that has altered a setting elsewhere,
overriding these settings. Do you have any 3rd-party image viewers
installed? Terry has FarStone Viewer, which affected his thumbnails so
that they were not refreshing for a particular image file type.
