Phone lines to PC

Hi folks,

My dad has a phone/fax machine attached to the back of his PC. Recently
when his phone rings it clicks straight on to the fax machine after 1 ring.
This only happens when the phone line is connected to the PC which he uses to
connect to the internet. If he switches the fax off and just has the phone
operating it still happens. Only when he disconnects the phone from the pc
does his phone/fax machine work ok. Can anyone shed any light on it.

Hope this makes sense.

Normally, I would suggest checking the settings in fax software. But since
this is a standalone fax machine, there isn't any. Is there anything in the
manual for the phone/fax that is helpful?

Perhaps a splitter at the jack: one line going to the phone/fax. The other
to the PC.

Can you clarify what this means? How/what is it "click"ing on through?
Do you mean the fax rings instantly? Or answers on the first ring?
Is the modem set to auto-answer?
Are the Line In / Phone Out jacks properly wired on both pieces?

Wall box>--------> PC Line in --> PC Phone out ----------------> FAX Line
in ----> FAX line out -->???
FAX line out would not be used in that case.
Or, is there a fax detector or something in there? Where? In the PC or
separate piece?

It would probably get you a faster answer if you could somehow indicate how
the two are wired up.
In the serial arrangemenbt I depicted above, the modem might be a fax/modem
and so the FAX feature is turned off, strange things might happen.

It's also difficult to determine from your descrip whether the "phone" is
a separate telephone or part of the fax machine?
Include the make and model of the fax machine; I"m familiar with quite a
few of them unless it's one of those "all-in-one" things. .
