phone jack trouble w/ Lexmark 6150 All-in-One

A friend has a Lexmark 6150 with a major fax/phone
line problem. The "LINE-IN" jack causes the phone line
to register as off-the-hook any time a phone line is
plugged in. There's no problem with the house wiring
or the phone... Any ideas???

Thanks,
Scott

It sounds like the modem in the printer has failed, I suspect repair will be
too costly unfortunately. It may just be the jack but it is a bit of a mission
to get at.

Scott,

I have a Lexmark X6170, the version of the X6150 with an ADF (auto doc
feed). I've found that you can fix nearly all the printer software foibles
by unplugging the printer from the usb port and the power source, waiting
30 seconds, and plugging everything back in, but only after powering up the
printer and computer. (Either pull the printer plug out of it's power
socket or pull the power pack module out of the printer if it's easier to
reach.)

This is Lexmark's standard procedure for resetting the printer software, and
would have been what some Indian guy would have suggested you try if you
called their 800 helpline. Also, if you go to the Lexmark site, there is a
fax setup utility update that was made available for both the X6150 and
X6170, although I don't know if it is directly related to the problem.

If you know what operating system is being used you can download it here:

http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-pe...oads.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/downloads.cgi&&req=:::::

Copy and paste this link to your browser search window, at the site enter
your operating system and select the tab "patches" to download the patch.

Thanks for the reply. The machine was unplugged &
reset multiple times while I was fixing another problem
but the phone/modem/fax is still "broken". I had heard
elsewhere that unplugging the machine for "a while" might
help so I tried that first.<G> I'm 99% certain the
problem is hardware-related. I was just hoping someone
could narrow it down to either the circuitry or the phone
jack/plug...

Thanks for the reply. I figure the problem is probably
"fatal" (ie: $$$ or SMT chip), but was hoping it might be
a widely-known, easy-to-fix problem...
