Phishing

My Windows XP Home Edition periodically notifies me that
I have a Windows update, which I then dutifully install.
HOW DO I KNOW THESE UPDATES ACTUALLY COME FROM MICROSOFT
RATHER THAN A PHISHER? HOW CAN I ENSURE THEY ARE REAL?

If the notification is from the Auto Update client then they are valid
updates from Microsoft.
If they are e-mails containing attachments or other forms of pop-ups then
they are not.
go to Windows Update and see what updates are available and also check you
Automatic Update setting on the Properties of My Computer
