The option was checked to delete any suspected junk email and there are no
emails in my delete folder. How might I retrieve those emails (which I got a
pop up that told me to check my junk email folder) so I can double check?

Look in your Junk email folder. Its a separate folder.

if they are not in your Deleted Items folder, they are GONE.
might uncheck the DELETE option so they will be in the Junk Mail folder next time.

If you tell it to delete rather move to Junk Mail they are gone.
