I wanted to let each of you know that over the next few weeks we will be
upgrading Windows AntiSpyware beta 1 users to Windows Defender through the
built in software update mechanism. This is a phased upgrade in order to
control the number of downloads in a single day. Please continue to provide
feedback on any issues you are seeing so they can be addressed.

Thanks for testing the beta!

Well I do hope that the current update problems, where they are downloaded
again and again, and the creation of multiple and spurious restore points are
solved before this roll out. I certainly will not be reinstalling Defender
until both these items have been fixed.

Richard.

Can you tell me what antivirus product you are running? I've seen one note
about the restore point issue, and I'm wondering if you can help confirm
something.

Norton Version11.0.16.4 . This is not the much berated 2006 version. I
believe mine is the 2005 version.
My problem with multiple restore points happened when I refreshed the Beta 2
on April 13th. (unlucky for some).
I have the unrefreshed version of Beta2 on a laptop, which until the latest
definitions update was working OK. Now this download fails and repeats etc.
The Av on this machine is NOD 32.

Hmm...

I thought that I'd seen a post somewhere tieing the excess restore points to
turning on prompts for not yet classified objects, and additionally relating
them to the issue of the Norton tamper-protection feature.

Are you seeing these tamper-protection log messages? (I'd have thought your
version did not have that feature.)

Microsoft is definitely aware of the issue with the restore points.

No I have not had any messages of that sort on either system. Note I have
uninstalled Defender on my main computer pending fixes for the current
problems and if 'Er indoors gets equally annoyed with the bounced definition
installs on the lap top that may soon be saying goodbye to Defender Beta 2.

First, WD creates a restore point every time the computer is started.
Exit WD for some reason, and start it again without restarting the computer
you will get a restore point. So far as I know WD is the only program that
creates a restore point every time it is started. I believe these restore
points are spurious.

Second, WD creates a restore point for not yet classified objects.
A restore point might be acceptable in this case. Perhaps the users
should have a say as to whether a restore point should be
cerated when it detects a not yet classified object or not.

I would personally like to see WD create a restore point IF (a big
if) and when it detects a malware and it is trying to get rid of it. It is
possible that it will not be able to get rid of the malware, and
a roll back will be required. All security programs that I have
worked with creates a restore point if they detect a malware
and they are going to make modifications to the system files.

Is it difficult to make WD behave in such a manner?

Last, but for from the least, the signature updates are still
causing problems.

Thanks for the response. I know they are hard at work on the definition
issues.

I know that update-related issues are still being worked on, and I believe
the restore-point question is as well.
