Phantom Hardware found

I'm using Windows XP Home and at startup it finds "New Hardware" in the form
of a modem which I removed long ago as well as a "PCI Simple Communications
Controller." I've tried removing them through the Device Manager, but
they're right back at startup again. Is there some reference in the Registry
that needs to be deleted perhaps or some other solution?

If it keeps getting re-detected, the it's some item of hardware still in the
machine. Perhaps its something built onto the motherboard? Go intothe BIOS
and disable it there if that's the case.
