"Phantom" File on Desktop: Can't delete

I saved an attached ".eml" file from a trusted domain in Outlook Express.
There was some kind of strangeness during the save and now I have a "xxx."
icon (greyed out) on my desktop that I can't delete: "file not found" and
"Cannot delete file: Cannot read from source file or disk."

I did a "Check Disk" with Auto-fix files and Scan for bad sectors with no
changes. I didn't see any events in the event log. Any suggestions?

Win XPPro SP2 all updates. OE-6.

Try this,

Open the Task Manager and kill the "explorer" process. Leave the Task
Manager open. Start a new task, enter "cmd" without the quotes. Navigate to
your desktop in the Command Prompt. Delete the file in question within the
Command Prompt. Type "explorer" in the Command Prompt to restart explorer
and have normal access to your Desktop.
