Phantom Device?

Hello all,

I am working on creating a "universal" image via sysprep. I am using
the sysprep driver scanner from vernalex.com to point to my various
drivers.

I am creating my image on a Toshiba Tecra S3 and testing it on a Tecra
S2. The interesting thing is that all the device drivers are
installed but when the system reboots and I log in I am met with the
new hardware wizard for an "unknown" device.

I check device manager and there are no unknown devices listed and
everything that should be in the list is there. The only "off" thing
I see is that the modem is listed as "Toshiba software modem #2" when
there is only the one modem. If I uninstall it and scan for hardware
it finds the modem and installs the drivers again which removes the #2
from the name.

Can anyone shed some light as to what device Windows is sensing is
there when everything already looks installed.

Thanks!

Modems can be a bit strange.
They may appear as a generic standard modem, a mfr specific model, or even a
serial interface on the first pass.
When this happens, you usually end up doing more than one driver install
pass, or preinstall the correct driver and possibly an .inf file.
In a few cases, windows has an existing .inf file that is incorrect.
(Outdated)

When laptops are involved, it becomes a bigger problem, since you may be
dependent on a model & mfr specific driver that is not really current.
I have an HP laptop that will run win2k and win XP, but the modem drivers
are for win ME, and will most likely not work with XP.
Naturally, the modem is built into the laptop, and uses a non standard I/O
buss connection.
