Personalizing Folder Icons

I had customized my file folders with pictures of what the folder contains.
after several months, XP Pro has reverted back to the defaults. when I try
to customize them, it shows the picture I want, but when I click apply, the
default appears. how do I get around this?
 
Set the Control Panel/Folder Options to show hidden files (checkbox on View
tab) The 'desktop.ini' file in that folder is probably corrupt. Rename that
to 'desktop.old', and try the configuration again. If no help, you can always
rename back.
