Personalized Menus

For some reason, the option to use personalized menus is not available on my
XP Pro system. I've gone into the location where it's suppose to be
(Taskbar and Start Menu Properties/Customize/Advanced and it's simply not
there. Any idea how I can get it back?

Mike,

Is you PC part of a Domain ?
If so it is possible to disable the use of personalised menus via Group
Policy.
It is also possible to do the same if your PC is stand alone though the
Local Policy Editor.

One system is on a domain, the other isn't and never has been. But, there's
no policy set for disabling the personalized menus on either the domain or
local policy of either computer.

I do have the option if I use Classic Start Menu, but not when using the
Windows XP Start Menu. How can I get it on the XP Start Menu?

Hey Mike!

From what I can see, there is no setting in the XP Start Menu properties
for Personalized Menus, only in the Classic Start Menu properties. I'd
try changing it in Classic, then switch to the classic start menu, then
go back into properties, and change it back to the normal XP start menu.
If that doesn't work, try this link:

Thanks Kurt!

That would explain it then. Before I reloaded my home system, I was using
the classic start menu (my wife doesn't like change so it took awhile to get
her to switch to the XP start menu). I may just have to go back to the
classic menu now.

Kurt is right - the standard XP menu system is personalised, but in a
different way, by having the most recent, commonly used, programs appear
on the left column of the Start Menu. I suggest that to get the most
out of that you take Start's customise for it and

select 'small icons'

Increase the number of programs shown (I use 15 but it depends on screen
space)

Probably uncheck the Internet and Email as you will probably have those
alongside in Quick Launch anyway.

Also review the options to have alongside (Advanced page).

Set up this way, the new menu starts being really useful
