Personal.xls

When I start Excel or open a file, PERSONAL.XLS always opens, either as the
new spreadsheet or along with the file I was opening. How do I change this?
It didn't happen before.

Matil,

You must have recorded macros into your PERSONAL.XLS. If you want these
macros available to you for every file you work with in XL, the allow it to
open. If you are not concerned about the macros, then you can delete/move
somewhere else, the PERSONAL.XLS. It is located in the XL startup folder
(anything located in the XL startup folder will open automatically each time
XL is started). For me, using Office 2003, its path is:

c:\Documents and Settings\[***USER NAME/LOGIN***]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART\

(make sure to change [***USER NAME/LOGIN***] to your user name/logon)

Personal.xls is the name of a file that lots of people use to hold the
macros/functions that they want available each time excel opens.

If you really don't want this to happen, you can close excel, find that file and
delete it (or move it somewhere else).

But if your personal.xls contains macros that you really want available, you may
want to just hide personal.xls so it's not visible.

Open excel
Make sure personal.xls is the activeworkbook
Window|Hide (in xl2003 menus)
close excel
When you're asked if you want to save personal.xls (hiding it is a change),
answer Yes.

Then test it by reopening excel.

ps. You can close excel and use Windows start button|search to look for
personal.xls.
