When Excel opens it has 2 copies of "PERSONAL" files open with the same name
(this files is used for storing my Macros). I cannot find where to delete
one of these so that only one copy exists. The file PERSONAL does not appear
in the XLSTART folder. When I search the "C" drive it cannot find a
PERSONAL.X* file.

Excel won't allow you to open two different files with the same name.

So either you have two windows open to the same workbook open or maybe the names
are different.

If you see
personal.xls:1
personal.xls:2
in the title bar, then you have multiple windows into that workbook.

Select the window you don't want and hit ctrl-w to close it. Then save the
file.

If you have different names (personal.xls, personal.xla, personal.xlsm, ...),
then there are ways of fixing that, too.

But the instructions would depend on what version of excel you're using and if
the workbook's windows are visible.
