Perplexing DVD/CD Drive Problems

I have a perplexing problem with my DVD/CD drives. None of them, whether
internal or external will write and none has a recordable tab on the
properties menu. Also, the right click menu to see the properties takes a
long time to display or it does not display at all.

I have deleted the drives and let XP recognize them on bootup and that does
not solve the problem. I have also edited the registry to make sure the CD
burn key is properly configured. I have also removed Roxio Easy CD to see if
there was a conflict with that software.

One internal and external drive can read CDs, the other internal drive gives
me a drive inaccessible and I/O error when it tries to read a disk. None of
the drives will write to either a CD or DVD.

Any ideas to solve this problem would be appreciated.

What are their make/models?
As far as we know at this point - they shouldn't be able to write. They may
all be strictly readers.

Assuming you indeed have a CD or DVD burning capable drive - did the burning
work with the third party applications?
One internal and external drive can read CDs, the other internal
drive gives me a drive inaccessible and I/O error when it tries to
read a disk. None of the drives will write to either a CD or DVD.

Could be bad hardware - controller, drivers, etc.
Any ideas to solve this problem would be appreciated.

Need more information.

- Drive make/models.
- Operating system and patch level.
- Firmware revision of the drives in question.
- Reaction of third party software in using the drives to burn.
- If you have the latest hardware drivers (chipset, controller, etc)
installed or not.

Yes, all are DVD writers, and they all wrote until recently. One is a
Plextor PX716A internal drive (this is the one that is giving theI/O error
message), one is a Matshita LF-D311 internal drive that came with the
computer. and the external drive is a Plextor PX708-UF. They all burned
using Easy CD Creator unti recently, then stopped burning and none has the
"recordable" tab on the properties menu.

I was contemplating a full disk format and reinstallation of XP and all
mysoftware but would prefer to avoid this time consuming possible solution.
thanks.
