Permissions

I have Win XP home( SP1) on a stand alone machine, and have been tryng to play around with permissions to folders etc.. This has led to me having to reinstal windows, so is there a FAQ of some kind so I don't make the same mistake again. Oh I successfully done this on one folder but other users were able to delete it. so you see i need help.
