Here's a quick rundown of our setup. I'm running windows server 2003
small business, and all the computers are on the domain.
In our remote location, I have a computer running xp pro sp2 that acts
as a print server through simple sharing. We also scan documents to
this computer, so I created a "scanned documents" share that people can
access \\prints\scanned documents.
We log on locally onto the machine and not the domain, so I could grant
local administrative rights, and do the file sharing. Printing works
just fine.
On the shared folder, I set the permissions for everyone to have full
controll, and for security to allow everyone to have full control.
When we scan in a file through the printer and drop it in the scanned
documents folder, we can access the share from a different computer,
but we can't copy. The error message is:
Cannot copy "filename": Access is Denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is
not currently in use.
I understand that this is a permissions error, but I don't understand
why. If I go into the Scanned Documents folder and look at the
permissions, "Everyone" has full control. However, if I right-click on
the file and look for the permissions settings, it doesn't show any.
For some reason, when we scan in a file, the proper permissions aren't
applying to it.
I even removed the computer from the domain and did simple file
sharing, and checked "allow other users to change my files" and it
still didn't work. Also, windows explorer doesn't even show a preview
of the file, so clearly I don't even have permissions to see it.
I'm all out of ideas and I need to get this working so we can do
scanning again. Sure I could create a network share for all the
documents to go, but this is a remote connection and our VPN speed
isn't that great.
Any ideas for how to get this working, I'd appreciate it. I already
went through the group policy settings on the server and everything
looks OK.
Thanks...
