Permanently delete suspected junk e-mail DOES NOT WORK!!

Jaime

Hello all,

I have several users who receive well over 300 junk-emals a day and would
like to not have to worry about the size of their mailbox (currently set at
ann unrealistic 100megs) when they are on the road with their BlackBerry's.
I found the "permanently delete suspected junk e-mail" in the options and
figured it needed abit of time before it started working, an optimist at
heart. so I gave it the benifir of the doubt for a full weekend and the user
still had 700+ messages in the space of a weekend.

There doesn't seem to be any info as to what other dependencies may be
required for this to work, or waht other setting s may be counter productive
maybe on the server.
I don't think this is a server rule, but can it be set up as one??.

Any help appreciated??

Junk E-mail Filter options in Outlook is a local client option. It does work
as long as you use Outlook.
What you need is a server-side Junk E-Mail Filter which you can control
centrally.
In general you configure the server to drop all the most obvious ones
directly (which accounts for over 80% of the Junk Email). Users can use the
filter in Outlook to personalize the filter settings specific to their needs
and filter the remaining 20% less obvious ones. This reduces the amount of
false-positives permanently dropped in your filtering mechanism.

Do you have an exchange server? If so, you need to spend your time figuring
out how to implement spam blocking on the server. Believe me, unless you
stop it from getting into the server, it's a losing battle.

Unfortunately I am not the Exchange Admin, but they have said that all the
necessary filters and updaes are active, and what the users are getting are
some of the remnants. But over 300 Junk-Emails a day does seem like a lot of
remants!!

Hi Roady,

I checked into that side, as mentioned to DLW, and recognize the fact that
if Junk-Mail is ending in the Junk Mail folder, the software, up to a certain
point, is behaving the way it should, albeit somewhat limited.
But the users reports that at least 99% of junk mail is being moved to the
Junk mail folder which is good. As this user is a heavy traveller he is prone
to getting a lot more Spam/Junk Mail that most of our users. I am basically
trying to get this working so that we can apply it to more of our users.
The end result required is at end of day or on an ongoing basis during the
day, we would like Junkmail automatically removed "Permanently"
I have also been looking into our Symantec software to se if there is
something there to do the trick but NADA / NIET so far!!

You want server-side filtering with a client-side option; that's simply not
going to work. The Junk E-mail filter of Outlook works when you are using
Outlook. Of course it doesn't work when you are using a BlackBerry. Unless
you go for a (working) server-side solution to sort out the Junk E-mail, his
BlackBerry has to take care of it instead.

Hi Roady,

The blackberry part is just a side line.
Users are not able to send any messages from their outlook or their
blackberry if they are over their allocated space.
So if the spam filter or the "Permanently delete suspected Junk-Mail" worked
properly, it wouldn't be a worry for people who are on the road a lot and
don't have access to their regular machine and outlook, as we don't have
access to OWA either :-(
Because it is not working, if someone is on the road for a week or more and
receives a couple of thousand emails during that time, they loose the
possibility of sending email, either Outlook wise or BlackBerry wise.
That's why I am looking for a way to clean up automatically the junk mail
folder if possible. (The synch issues would also be goodd but I'll get to
that one later!!)

Again; it works properly but since you are using Outlook Junk E-mail
filtering it only works when Outlook is running. If they are on the road and
don't open Outlook, how can Outlook delete the messages for you? What part
of that is confusing to you?

If you want Junk Emails to be deleted when Outlook is closed, you'll need to
have a server-side solution.

Which mailing method do your users use when they are on the road? Only their
BlackBerry?
